Dr. David Nichols, a leading authority on the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, presented at the annual Constitution Day lecture on September 21, 2011 at Gettysburg College. The lecture, “Eisenhower 1956: The Suez Canal Crisis and War in the Middle East”, was presented by the Eisenhower Institute of Gettysburg College.
Nichols discussed his most recent book, Eisenhower 1956: The President’s Year of Crisis – Suez and the Brink of War, the story of how President Eisenhower guided the United States through the Suez Canal crisis of 1956.
Nichols’ book draws on hundreds of documents declassified in the last 30 years, outlining Eisenhower’s steps as he managed the greatest international crisis of his presidency. Nichols uses formerly “top secret” minutes of National Security Council and Oval Office meetings to illuminate a crisis that threatened to escalate into global conflict.
In addition to the Constitution Day lecture, Dr. Nichols also spoke to Professor Karen Pinto’s US Middle East History Class on Wednesday September 21, 2011.
